An ecologically healthy shoreline is critical to the health of any water body. The area within a few metres of where the water meets the land is a crucial life zone for up to 90% of the lake's plants and animals at some point in their life. The water in front of the shore acts as a nursery, daycare and cafeteria for a variety of species including invertebrates, fish, amphibians and birds. In its natural state the vegetation adjacent to the water helps to stabilize the soil, filters out nutrients and pollutants and provides food and shelter for wildlife.

Many waterfront owners are concerned about erosion of their shoreline. Often the erosion is the result of human activities that contributed to the destabilization of the shoreline soil. Stabilizing the shoreline can be accomplished by restoring the natural shoreline conditions using rock and vegetation. Even shorelines that have already been hardened and sterilized can be naturalized to make them more environmentally friendly. EcoMedic will develop a shoreline plan that will allow you to enjoy your favourite activities while still maintaining a healthy area for wildlife. EcoMedic will act on your behalf to obtain work permits and will supervise the construction.

Take a moment to assess the needs of your shoreline...

  1. Has more than 20% of your shoreline been altered or hardened?
  2. Has more than 20% of your in-water habitat been altered?
  3. Is your shoreline eroding?
  4. Is your break wall or dock constructed of creosoted or pressure treated lumber?
  5. Do you have spawning areas along your shoreline?
  6. Do you leave a minimum 3 metre buffer of natural vegetation between your lawn area and the water?
  7. Do you have non-native invasive plant or bird species on your property?
  8. Are you planning to do work in or near the water?
  9. Do you use pesticides, chemical fertilizers or high phosphate cleaning products?
